May 24-25 (Memorial Day Weekend)
Music @ Madewood, a spring opera festival held at Madewood Plantation House, a National Historic Landmark outside Napoleonville, Louisiana (between New Orleans and Baton Rouge) announces it 2008 schedule of performances: a duo of topsy-turvy operatic worlds envisioned by two very different composers from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Christoph Willibald Gluck and Jacques Offenbach.
Saturday, May 24 at 6 p.m., Gluck's L'ile de Merlin, ou le monde en renverse, which received its US premiere in 2007 at the Spoleto festival in Charleston, will be presented in Rosedale Theatre on the grounds of Madewood, with dinner following in the mansion. The production is presented in association with the New Orleans Opera Association and conducted by its General and Artistic Director, Robert Lyall.
On Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m., Madewood's Future Virtuosos young aritsts program, under the direction of John Keene of LSU Opera, will present Offenbach's L'ile de Tulipatan, ou le monde en renverse, in the ballroom of Madewood.
Music @ Madewood is the successor to the Madewood Arts Festival, which presented operas at the country estate from 1974-1983. Singers such as Paul Plishka, Ruth Falcon, Michael Devlin, Anthony Laciura, Linda Zoghby and English National Opera principals Sarah Walker, Eileen Hannan and Penelope MacKay, presented concerts and performed in works such as Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Rossini’s L’ocasione fa il ladro, von Suppe’s Die Schone Galatea, Pergolesi’s The Music Master, Milhaud’s Operas Minutes, Walton’s Façade, Mozart’s Bastien and Bastienne and Weber’s Abu Hassan.
Last year’s production of Menotti’s The Medium, which featured Sarah Jane McMahon as Monica and Gwendolyn Jones as Madame Flora, was nominated for Most Creative Opera Production in the New Orleans Classical Music Awards.
Both operas will be sung in English. L’ile de Merlin will be set in the Louisiana Bayou country in a new translation by festival director Keith Marshall. It will be presented in Rosedale Theatre, a renovated farmhouse on the grounds that features a full prosenium-arch stage and orchestra pit, as well as an opera library and archives open to the public.
There will be motorcoach service from New Orleans for L'ile de Merlin, with appetizers and an introduction to the opera on board.
Tickets for the Opera's will be available April 2, 2008 through the New Orleans Opera's box office,
